Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Perry did not decide to explore acting as a profession until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were concerned about the adverse effects that stress could have. Perry, who was too timid to perform in the school, began to perform in theater classes at Northwestern University because she wanted to meet new people. After graduating Perry moved into New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California which is where she discovered acting jobs. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway together as part of The Other Place, in 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie and Kevin McKidd. This was presented at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry was a part of nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on the ABC political drama Scandal in which her father was the main character. The character she played was the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. She was cast in the role by auditioning for an open role despite being a fan of the persona.
