Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on the 21st of March that Coleman was set to portray Matt Smith as the Doctor's companion after Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other characters left the show. Moffat chose her for the part because she was the most successful when working with Smith and was able to speak faster than him.
